Abstract

Travel is something intimately connected with joy and emotional fulfilment. The motivations for travel are deeply personal, yet each journey inevitably reflects multiple dimensions such as landscape, human life, local history, and cultural symbols. Travel writing, therefore, becomes both a record of the traveller’s encounters and a reflection of their perceptions. By analysing the traveller’s gaze and perspective, one may uncover the underlying ideological or political positioning of a text. In examining travel writing, it is essential to consider several foundational aspects: the purpose of travel, the type of journey undertaken, and the identity of the traveller. Prior to the journey, certain preconceptions are often formed—through inquiry, prior reading, or cultural imagination—that shape the decision to visit a particular place. These preliminary impressions constitute the anticipatory view, which often serves as the initial stimulus for travel. The experiences during the journey may align with, or diverge from, this anticipatory vision. Subsequently, when the traveller narrates and interprets his experiences, a reflective gaze emerges—one that is often reshaped by the lived reality of travel. The reflective gaze may differ greatly. The critical task in analysing travel narratives is to explore the tension between the anticipatory view and the reflective gaze, as it is within this dialectic that the narrative structure of the text is shaped. Through travel writing, a single place may be represented in multiple, even conflicting, ways. This study seeks to investigate how such contradictions between expectation and reflection shape the narrative construction of travel texts, with special reference to O. K. Johny’s Bhutan Dinangal.
